In an interview on GamesIndustry.biz, Bill Gardner, CEO of Eidos US, had some words about the PS3 price cut along with some follow-up comments about Eidos’ decision on holding off releasing PS3 games till 2008.
Regarding the price cut, Gardner stated that, "I don’t think it is enough to reach the mass consumer, but I think it is enough to get it moving again, and it will move a little bit further, and they’ll need to do it again and it will move a bit further." Gardner compared the price cut as a good value; you might as well pick up a PS3 for its HD/Blu-ray player along with its game capabilities than just picking up a standalone HD or Blu-ray player.
As for Eidos’ intentions of holding off on developing PS3 games till 2008, Gardner said that there were a few reasons why they decided to do that. First, since Eidos is primarily a European company, just being in Europe puts them a few months behind the U.S. release of the PS3.
Another reason is that Eidos had no intentions of releasing PS3 games on the day the PS3 debut. Gardner said, "I don’t like to release on day and date. Never have, anywhere I’ve ever been. I hate that, because there is a zero installed base on day one. I look at that, and I’m trying to get part of the installed base. 20% of zero? That’s zero."
But I wouldn’t count out any of Eidos’ PS3 games till 2008, Gardner hinted, "In terms of what our plans are, we’ve been re-looking at when we are going to be releasing certain products. It should be before calendar 2008."
