During a conference call, Chia Song Hwee, CEO and President of Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, revealed that they’re developing an improved processor chip for the Xbox 360. He stated that the design of the 45nm processor is not complete and hinted that it’ll begin in late 2008 or early 2009.
But for fans that’ve been holding out for the 65nm processor, the wait will soon be lifted.
Chia stated, "As 65nm just started production in the last two quarters, you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that timeframe." Since the new chips have been in production during the past 6 months, I would expect them to hit 360 consoles in the near future — possibly this fall.
While Chia didn’t specifically refer to the Xbox 360 by name, it’s known that Chartered has worked with Microsoft before.
