Back in July, we ran a story that Sony may be planning a 40GB PS3. So is it true or another random rumor to throw away? Well, I don’t have all the answers but here’s a little story that might make the news a little truer than it is.
Sky News has a report that Sony has hired Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn to begin production on the new 40GB model. According to the source, Sony decided to go with FoxConn because the manufacturer has had previous dealings with Sony before; FoxConn currently produces Sony’s PS2s. Simple, eh?
Even though the specs of the trimmed down PS3 haven’t been revealed, folks are mumbling that minor features such as USB ports or backwards compatibility may be cut for the sake of price and accessibility. The rumored price of $399 is still sticking around, too.
Industry folks are expecting an announcement by Sony sometime this week about the 40GB PS3. Considering that Halo 3 is coming out in less than 24 hours, maybe Sony is trying to divert some attention their way. Hey, it could work considering the PS3 has been on the rise lately.
