According to Smarthouse, Toshiba and Microsoft are working on a new Xbox 360 console that’ll feature a built-in HD-DVD player and a larger hard-drive.
One of the reasons for the new model is a response to the surge of PS3 sales in several countries. Studies have shown in various countries including UK, Spain and Australia that people are purchasing PS3s because of its Blu-ray player.
Another reason for the new model is the less than stellar sales the attachable HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 have made. Microsoft is planning the new model for major entertainment purposes. There are rumors that the new model will include a dual HD TV turner and a docking support for MP3 players.
Scott Browning, marketing director for Australia’s 2nd largest consumer electronics retailer, said, "The device is a lay down mis`ere and essential for the HD DVD camp. We are told that one is coming. The PS3 has been extremely successful for Sony in getting Blu-ray off the ground and for Microsoft, the omission of a built in HD DVD player is set to hurt sales going forward as consumers are aware that the PS3 comes with a Blu-ray player."
Lastly, it’s estimated the new model will debut in either late 2008 or early 2009. So there’s still a wait for the ol’ model.
