Fall of the Imperfects! EA, Marvel game deal dissolves

Marvel Nemesis Rise of the ImperfectsWhen EA closed the doors of its Chicago studio, it looked like the entire publishing deal between Marvel and EA may have died with it. Word has it, that EA Chicago was working on the first sequel in the Marvel Nemesis series.

The first game, Rise of the Imperfects, was one that many critics had rather nasty things to say about when it was released in September of 2005.

Despite the dissolution, Marvel doesn’t anticipate this to be anything but a hiccup in their plans to release more games based on character licenses. (So there probably will be plenty of crappy Spider-Man games released in the coming years.}

A representative of Marvel said, "It will not affect Marvel’s ongoing plans to release fighting games based on the Marvel properties in the future."

I was at least a bit curious to see what EA was going to do with the second Marvel Nemesis game. Some people get down on a studio when they make a bad game, and maybe that’s deserved. However, I like to think that they will have learned from their mistakes to come back and make a stronger game in the next round.

Rumor on the street is that Marvel is going to open up their own publishing division and begin doing the work for themselves. It’s highly doubtful that they’ll do their own development though. That, most likely, will still be hired out to third parties. It’s a long shot, but let’s hope they get Bethesda to make some sort of open ended crime fighting RPG when they’re done with Fallout 3.
